We woke up in 2011 a little earlier than we would have liked. We got up and went out for an early morning run. We opted not to run that far and went with a 6.5mi course as this would let us sleep in for a bit, run, and still have plenty of time until we needed to check out to shower and clean ourselves us. The run went very well, with great temps and we enjoyed our last run along beautiful A1A. If you care to, you care read more about running in Key West, including my mapped out path to run around the entire island, over on my other blog, Tri Jeff Tri!
After running, we took showers, packed up the room, and went downstairs to check out, right at noon. We checked out luggage with the ever friendly and helpful bell staff and then got some lunch at the poolside bar. We then grabbed some lounge chairs right next to the jacuzzi and spent the next two hours or so reading (I finished Wikinomics and began reading The Cobweb by my favorite author, Neal Stephenson). Around 2.30pm, we went back in, got our bags, and took the shuttle to the airport (we opted not to walk so that we could maximize the time by the pool). We checked in and went through security and then found that, unlike last time we were here, Key West International Airport now has a bar (this has both indoor and outdoor seating...yes, this is a beach bar IN an airport!). Looks like they got major gate upgrades, and the Last Call Beach Bar, in 2009...these are a most welcome addition, making time in the airport much better while not losing the tiny beach town feel! We got some drinks and a slice of Key Lime Pie to pass the hour or so until our flight boarded. While in the bar, we had some jokes with the friendly but abrupt bartender and talked to a couple that was supposed to have been on a 12.00n flight but kept getting pushed back to where the airline was telling them it would be 5pm at the earliest. Not the best situation...been there, done that. But, if you're going to get stuck, Key West is the place to do it. Our flight, unlike theirs, boarded and left pretty close to on-time and, two hours later, we were back at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
We had dinner at the Tequileria restaurant (no TripAdvisor page, so here is their Yelp page) we saw on the way out, with me getting barbacoa tacos and Cin a quesadilla with barbacoa meat in it. Both were very good, but a tad small. After dinner, we headed to our gate, boarded and took off about 45min late or so and then, one quick hour later, were back in BWI. We got our luggage and picked up the shuttle van to Airport FastPark (Blue Lot, of course). Quick car ride and we were back home.
Key West vacation -> a success!
